The Supreme Court of Victoria is the highest court in the Australian state of Victoria and one of the busiest trial courts in Australia. It has broad jurisdiction and hears a wide range of civil and criminal cases.
The court has both original and appellate jurisdiction, meaning it can hear cases for the first time (original jurisdiction) or hear appeals from lower courts (appellate jurisdiction).
Where is the Supreme Court of Victoria Based?
The court is based in Melbourne and has three divisions: the Trial Division, the Court of Appeal, and the Commercial Court. The judges of the Supreme Court are appointed by the Governor in Council on the recommendation of the Attorney-General.
